Hi Seth & Ian --
I am now in Takayama. The semiannual festival is not happening now, but some of the floats are on display, including this one. The turtles have strange heads because the craftsmen who built them 300 years ago had not seen turtles (they lived in the mountains). A few days ago I saw some impressive shrines and gardens in Kyoto, and in Nara I saw lots of tame deer, and the world's largest wooden structure. Tonight, in a small town in the mountains in Japan, I had one of the best burritos I've ever tasted. That was a pleasant surprise.
